Ed Levine's Serious Diet: Week 3

Temptation.I have to say that dieting in public, digital fashion has been kind of motivating. The community of Serious Eaters has been so supportive and so helpful I feel like I've been thrown into some kind of Weight Watchers–like situation, which is most definitely a good thing.

I regard my Thursday-morning weigh-in with the same mixture of dread and excitement that used to pervade my actual Weight Watchers experiences when I actually went to that company's meetings many years ago.

But the digital weigh-in does function as an online Serious Dieters meeting. In fact if anyone wants to join me, I would really appreciate other folks weighing in on Thursday morning and reporting the results by commenting on these weekly posts. If no one else finds this idea motivating, appealing, or attractive, that's cool, too. Just knowing we're all in this together helps.

This week's challenges: chocolate, hot chocolate, macarons, an almost perfect baguette, Vermont farmstead cheeses, diner breakfast.

I actually took my first weekend off since we launched Serious Eats a little more than a year ago. We went to Woodstock, Vermont, where there was much good food to be had:

A world-class chocolatier named William Winand: I will post separately about him in the near future, but this guy is the real deal: great bonbons, hot chocolate, and French macarons.

A very good local baguette accompanied by many terrific local farmstead cheeses I found at the Dartmouth Food Co-op in Hanover, New Hampshire.

A terrific, low-key, super-simple Italian restaurant, Osteria Pane Salute. I ordered the grilled vegetables and the chicken legs braised in garlic and wine.

A classic 12-seat diner, Wasp's, where the chef-owner whips up a mean plate of hash, fine plate-sized pancakes, and killer grilled sweet potato maple muffins, all served with a side order of major sass. More to come on Wasp's as well.

In short, there was a lot of temptation everywhere I walked or drove.

But I did practice portion-control as best as I could, and what I hope will save me when I get on the scale is the amount of exercise I got. On Saturday morning I worked out on the elliptical trainer for almost an hour. On Sunday I went snowshoeing for almost two hours up and down these incredibly gorgeous trails at Mount Tom. I brought my heart-rate monitor with me, and I was amazed at how many calories I burned. I ended up expending more than 900 calories in my snowshoeing adventure. Further proof of how strenuous snowshoeing is: My parka, pants and long underwear were drenched in sweat.

All right, all right. The time has come: Yes! Down another pound! I am on a three-week losing (or should I say winning) streak.

Next week's challenge: My birthday is coming up this Sunday, and I have three days of eating with friends and family planned. Stay tuned.

You're doing Great!!! Always remember you didn't put it on overnight. Good Luck and Happy Birthday! Enjoy your family and friends! One thing to remember to is that you are also building muscle the more you excercise, so your actual weight loss is probably closer to 3 lbs because muscle weighs more than fat.

It's the middle of week 2 for me. My weigh-ins are on Tuesdays, so those are the numbers I'll send.

Week 1 - down 3 pounds - still in the diet honeymoon.

Keep up the good work!

I may join you Ed. I need to lose the remaining holiday weight plus those pesky 5 pounds I've been grumbling about for ages. I never thought the online idea would work, but you just might be the inspiration.

Congrats on your latest pound, Ed! I'd join you, but I don't own a scale--I discovered that it was often demoralizing to step on it! I do take weekly measurements, though, and I'm down 7 inches around my waist in the span of one year and one month. Woot!

Stay strong for your birthday! Mine is a recipe for disaster, but I keep the "make healthy choices" mantra at the forefront of my mind. =) Happy Birthday!!!

Bravo Ed, you are awesome. I'll weigh in with you on Thursday mornings. I'll even post my bodyfat % in the greater interests of science and the serious eater readership.

sorry, i meant "serious eats readership"

I'll definitely join in on the fun. I weigh on Wednesdays, so it'll be perfect!

Great job, Ed. It sounds like you really have a handle on yourself for this effort.

I'll join in! I go to Weight Watchers and weigh-in on Thursday afternoons. I will post this weeks progress.

I've been going since May 2007 and have lost 22+ (some a couple of times-lol) and about 10+ prior to that- which I consider fantastic considering the sucky meds I have to take that cause weight gain(the source of the 40+ I put on in 2006)

Ed, I wish I could report a similar result from the two-hour snowshoe hike. I ended up GAINING 2 lbs from the weekend! Your ability to taste-test and not overdo it is awesome. Keep it going!

Good job! I think it is amazing that someone in your "food position" can actually lose any weight!! btw---I personally hope you take the day off from your dieting on your birthday. Who knows, treating yourself well on your special day, whether thru food or activity, it may help keep you motivated to reach your desired healthy weight:)

Good for you Ed! Weekends - esp. weekends away - are always the most treacherous time. I'll join in with my numbers next week.

Suckiness of all suckiness. I hadn't weighed myself in months, but they did it to me yesterday at the Dr.'s office. I'm 3 lbs. more than I was before X-Mas. I think I gained more than that over the holidays, so I may be shedding after all. We'll see.

Weekends are toughest for me. But I'm down from 215+ in September to 186.5 today. No carbs is the key. I had a hanger steak at Bar Americain yesterday and pancetta wrapped porchetta today from DiPalo's but NO BREAD!
--Guttergourmet

that's terrific! i'm rooting for you!
